The Hengchun Peninsula is blessed with abundant sunshine, and residents on the west-coast side make good use of the natural coral reef rock terrain to harvest sea salt and then use the bittern to produce tofu. At the Houwan Community you can join residents in making nigari (sea salt extract) tofu, experiencing the lifestyle of generations of previous Houwan residents up close.

The uplifted coral reefs in the Kenting National Forest Recreation Area, continually driven upward by plate movement, are a sight rarely seen around the globe. This was originally a marine garden where countless stony corals, calcareous algae, foraminifera, and all kinds of shells gathered. Plate movement that began 500,000 years ago turned it into an uplifted coral reef ecosystem visible on land. It has a rich ecology, with a monsoon rainforest and limestone terrain.

The Sheding Community actively promotes ecological conservation, protecting its rich natural resources, with such rarities as bioluminescent fungi, Golden Birdwing butterflies, Big-Headed Stick Insects, etc. No matter whether it is plants, animals, geology, cultural heritage, or fascinating landscapes, there are superlatives everywhere here, making it well worth a visit!

The Houwan Community is located on the west-coast side of Kenting National Park, close to the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. The sea here is calm and safe, suitable for watersports such as snorkeling and use of unpowered watercraft.
