About the tour

Located in the mountainous region of Taichung City, the Yuanzueishan (Yuanzuei Mountain) Trail is known for its steep cliffs. Many cliffs are encountered along the way, the forest is complex, and there are many branch trails, making it an extremely fun and interesting hiking route.

Because this trail is quite challenging, and requires good physical fitness and courage to complete, it is recommended that you objectively assess your condition before registering for this itinerary.

Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area, located in Taiwan’s central region, is gifted with rich forest resources. Sightings of Formosan Reeve’s Muntjacs, Formosan Serows, and other wild animals are common, along with birdlife sightings of even such rarely seen specimens as the Mikado Pheasant and Swinhoe’s Pheasant.

Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area is located in central Taiwan, at Taichung City’s Heping District, about a two-hour drive from the urban center. Dasyueshan’s forest landscape of intricately intertwined complexity, with a consummate diversity of plant types, provides a prime habitat for wildlife. Encounters with such wild animals as the Formosan Reeve’s Muntjac, Formosan Serow, and White-faced Flying Squirrel are common. Visiting the easy-touring trails in the park, you’ll be presented with such famed scenic spots as the Syueshan Giant Tree, Sky Pond (Tianchih), and other sights.

This tour’s second-day challenge is what is hailed as Taiwan’s most beautiful mid-level mountain – Yuanzueishan (Yuanzuei Mountain). It has an elevation of 2,180m. The hike requires use of both hands and feet, with numerous rope climbs up precipitous 90-degree rock faces, requiring domination of one’s sense of fear to reach the summit. From the bare knife-edge summit of exposed granite, the field of vision is wide open, and the sweeping vistas provids a great thrill. After summiting, the same cliffs must be tackled on the way down. This is a mountain-hike route that requires both physical strength and courage.

- Scenic Highlights -
▲ Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area
Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area boasts rich forest resources. The pristine forest is a great spring of phytoncides. Spanning low to high altitudes, it is home to four forest types, subtropical, warm, temperate, and cold – a quintessential band of Taiwan natural forest. Visiting the easy-touring trails in the park, you’ll be presented with such famed scenic spots as the Syueshan Giant Tree and the smaller Giant Tree. There will also be a high chance to encounter such avian denizens of the forest as the Swinhoe’s Pheasant, Taiwan Hill Partridge, and Taiwan Rosefinch.

▲ Sky Pond (Tianchih)
The Sky Pond sits at an elevation of 2,600m above sea level. It is 0.4ha in area. This is an alpine lake, and there is a chance to enjoy snowy scenery when cold spells strike in winter. The Rueisyue Gazebo beside the pool gives this place a unique landscape, and a romantic vantage point from which to watch majestic seas of clouds rolling in.

▲ Yuanzueishan Trail
The Yuanzueishan Trail is approximately 2.1km long. This is a thrilling summit-ascent route that is divided into three parts, including forest trail, moss-covered primeval forest pathway, and natural rock walls. A hike-and-climb route with great variation, the first half of the hike features stair ascents and original forest. The second half features fast-rising altitude and then encounters rock walls, with knife-blade vertical cliff faces of almost 90 degrees.
