About the tour

Relive forestry life during the Japanese administration period of Taiwan by taking the heritage Wulai Log Cart, which was used to transport timber in days gone by.

Fushan village (Tranan) located in the deep mountains of Wulai: Witness how they perform blessing rituals and experience the everyday life of the Atayal community.

On the outskirts of Taipei, observe the ferns and butterflies ecology up close during an easy hiking trip through this magnificent forest in the Neidong National Forest Recreation Area.

If you want to understand the inseparable historical origin of the Wulai Log Cart and the Taiwan forestry industry, this is definitely a tour route you cannot miss out on. Hop onto the original Wulai Log Cart, which in days of yore transported timber, shuttle through the mountain forest, delve into the old photographs of the Wulai Forestry Life Museum, and relive the forestry life as it was during the period of the Japanese administration.

And there is much more than just the forestry culture. Wulai, an Atayal tribe settlement, is the northernmost Austronesian settlement in the world. Let the tribal elders take you into the tribe’s living area. From the Catholic Church and the Ark Church, which are the tribe’s belief centers, to Fushan Elementary School and the Atayal Cultural Relics Room, you’ll be able to gain in-depth understanding of the fascinating Atayal culture. After this, continue on into the Neidong National Forest Recreation Area, amidst mountains and along riversides, observing tree ferns and a diverse ecology that already existed in the Jurassic era, and enjoying air rich with revitalizing phytoncides and negative ions.

- Scenic Highlights -

▲ Neidong National Forest Recreation Area
The Neidong National Forest Recreation Area is the most accessible National Forest Recreation Area in the Greater Taipei area. With an altitude between 230 m and 800 m, it is home to a low-altitude forest environment. The abundant water resources of the Nanshi River and Neidong River provide a good habitat and growth environment for animals as well as plants. This is one of the most popular birdwatching spots in northern Taiwan. Here you can find a rich variety of ferns and insects; on the short waterfall trail 65 species of ferns are waiting to be discovered. It is truly a living nature classroom open to the public.

▲ Wulai Log Cart
The Wulai Log Cart was originally used for logging and transportation within the mountain forest. After logging was suspended, the trolley-cart facility was converted into a sightseeing-train service for tourists. While the light trolley-cart moves slowly through the forest along the riverbank, you get a view of grandiose scenery consisting of mountains, forest, and green fields, an experience loved by young and old alike.

▲ Fushan Village (Tranan)
Pay a visit to this still not overly developed Atayal settlement on the outskirts of Taipei, which has a notably leisurely and quiet atmosphere. Starting out from the painted wall and the Fushan Elementary School, we take a walk along the Ma’an ancient canal Trail, observing the culture and beliefs of the tribe while at the same time enjoying the rich animal and plant life along the way. We even get to see the tribe’s Life Conventions Stele, gaining deeper insight into this people, who are so committed to preserving the environment.
