Sankeng Old Street and Hakka Culture Tour

The scenic Hakka Romantic Avanue seems to slow down at the Hakka Village of Sankeng, whose Longtan First Street is better known Sankeng Old Street. The Taoist Longtan Temple, the Holy Hog Festival in the first month of the lunar calendar, the century-old Qingqiandi ancient residence—everything in this hamlet has a quaint nostalgia to it. It is a truly charming place amid the fields of Taoyuan.

This tour includes a workshop in a traditional old store to make your own “NiuWenShui”, a typical Hakka sweet. This brown-sugar-coated variation on Taiwan’s low-calorie glutinous rice cake called mochi resembles a water buffalo immersed in water up to its neck. The brown sugar is mixed with ground ginger for an extra kick, and sprinkled with crunchy peanut chunks and sesame seeds that contrast nicely with the springy structure and sweet flavor of the glutinous rice ball itself. Now you’ll have a chance to re-create and savor this country candy from the old days!

For lunch, we will take you to the Sankeng Natural and Ecological Park for a fun picnic of tasty traditional fare such as gedaofan, a rice dish set in a ring of green and beans, prepared by local ladies.
