When adventurers discovered the teak forests in northern Thailand, many foreign businessmen flocked to the area, positioning Chiang Mai as the center of a thriving teak industry.
These foreign foresters, also known as "teak wallahs," oversee most of the logging concessions in the region.
Aided by local labor and hardy elephants, they do the difficult and dangerous work of extracting teak logs and drifting them downstream to be graded and sold.
Today, although the teak trees are gone, the river and forestry stations remain, and Chiang Mai's relaxed vibe is as charming as ever. Ping Nakara draws inspiration from these bygone eras, with an intimate hotel built in an elegant colonial style from this period.
