In the early 1900s, oak had become a scarce commodity in Europe, sparking a gold rush for lumber.
When adventurers discovered the teak forests in northern Thailand, many foreign businessmen flocked to the area, positioning Chiang Mai as the center of a thriving teak industry.
These foreign foresters, also known as "teak wallahs," oversee most of the logging concessions in the region.
Aided by local labor and hardy elephants, they do the difficult and dangerous work of extracting teak logs and drifting them downstream to be graded and sold.
Today, although the teak trees are gone, the river and forestry stations remain, and Chiang Mai's relaxed vibe is as charming as ever. Ping Nakara draws inspiration from these bygone eras, with an intimate hotel built in an elegant colonial style from this period.
The hotel's elegant gingerbread architecture is adorned with hand-carved teak wood carvings, creating a cool and peaceful environment.
In the 19 rooms you will find thoughtful use of natural materials and a unique and functional style.
This sophisticated design is complemented by relaxed and professional service, providing a welcoming respite for all travelers.
Enjoy the tranquility on the poolside lanai, curl up with a book in our library, or relax with a drink in the rotunda.
Whatever your preferences, we're sure you'll love this return to elegance.
